What is BAC? BAC stands for Blood Alcohol Concentration, which is a measure of the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream. In technical terms, BAC is measured in grams of alcohol per deciliter of blood. For example, a BAC of 0.08% means there are 0.08 grams of alcohol in every 100 mL of your blood – this is the standard used to define the legal limit for driving under the influence in most states (including Arizona).

In simpler terms, 0.08% BAC is like saying 0.08% of your blood is alcohol.

Even lower BAC levels can impair you, but 0.08% is the threshold at which it becomes illegal for most adult drivers to operate a vehicle in Arizona (more on Arizona’s specific laws shortly).

How is BAC measured? BAC can be measured by breath, blood, or urine tests.

Breathalyzers estimate BAC by analyzing alcohol in your breath, since alcohol in the bloodstream passes into air in the lungs and can be exhaled. Blood tests directly measure the percentage of alcohol in a blood sample and are very accurate when done properly. Urine tests can detect alcohol and its metabolites as well.

Each method has its uses: police often use breath tests roadside for quick results, whereas blood tests might be used later for precision. It’s important to note that BAC reflects current alcohol levels in your system – it rises as you drink and then falls over time as your body metabolizes the alcohol.

What is “one drink”? People often talk about “one drink” in relation to BAC. In the U.S., one standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol. This is roughly equal to:

  • 12 oz of beer (about 5% alcohol)
  • 5 oz of wine (about 12% alcohol)
  • 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (80-proof liquor, about 40% alcohol)

Each of these has about the same amount of alcohol. Drinking one standard drink will raise the average person’s BAC by a certain amount (depending on body weight and other factors), and the body can generally metabolize around one drink per hour.

In terms of BAC, an average person’s body eliminates alcohol at a rate of about 0.015 BAC per hour (though this can vary).

That means if your BAC is 0.08%, it could take on the order of 5–6 hours or more for it to fully drop to 0.00%.

In fact, experts note that the half-life of alcohol in the body is about 4–5 hours, and it can take around 25 hours for your system to clear all alcohol after you stop drinking.

Factors that affect BAC: There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how many drinks it takes to reach a certain BAC, because everyone’s body is different. Many factors influence your BAC level and how quickly you metabolize alcohol:

  • Body Weight & Size: Generally, a smaller or lighter person will reach a higher BAC than a larger person from the same amount of alcohol. Alcohol distributes into body water – if you have less body water (because you weigh less or have a higher body fat percentage), the alcohol is more concentrated in your blood. For example, a 120-pound individual will typically have a higher BAC than a 180-pound individual after identical drinks.
  • Biological Sex: Biological sex plays a role. Women often reach higher BAC levels than men of the same weight who drink the same amount. This is partly because women tend to have less water percentage in the body and may have lower levels of a stomach enzyme (ADH) that helps metabolize alcohol. Hormonal differences and body composition mean alcohol can affect women more quickly.
  • Age: As we get older, our bodies process alcohol more slowly. An older adult might have a higher BAC than a younger person after the same drinks, because metabolism tends to slow with age.
  • Food in the Stomach: Drinking on an empty stomach leads to faster alcohol absorption. If you have eaten a meal, especially one with protein or fat, before or while drinking, the alcohol will absorb more slowly. Food gives your body time to start breaking down alcohol before it hits the bloodstream. However, eating after you’ve already been drinking won’t lower your BAC – it may help you feel a bit better or delay further absorption, but it won’t eliminate alcohol that’s already in your blood.
  • Drinking Rate and Strength of Alcohol: How quickly you drink matters. If you consume several drinks in a short time, your BAC will spike faster than if those drinks are spread out over hours. Your body can only metabolize so much per hour. Additionally, the type of alcoholic beverage – or more accurately, its alcohol concentration – affects BAC.

Stronger drinks (like shots of hard liquor or high-proof cocktails) introduce more alcohol into your system quickly. Two ounces of whiskey will raise BAC much more than two ounces of wine, for example, because the concentration of alcohol is higher. Carbonation (as in champagne or mixed drinks with soda) can also speed up absorption for some people.

  • Medications & Health Conditions: Many medications (prescription or OTC) can interact with alcohol or affect metabolism. For instance, some medications slow down the breakdown of alcohol. Health conditions involving the liver, kidneys, or stomach can significantly alter how long alcohol stays in your system. Someone with liver disease, for example, will metabolize alcohol much more slowly. Even dehydration or fatigue can have an impact on how alcohol affects you.
  • Gender Hormones and Enzymes: Studies have shown women have lower levels of certain alcohol-metabolizing enzymes (like alcohol dehydrogenase) in the stomach, meaning more alcohol enters the bloodstream instead of being broken down first. People who regularly drink heavily can also have changes in metabolism – some develop tolerance, but heavy chronic drinking can impair the liver’s efficiency over time.
  • Emotional State and Other Factors: High stress or shock can sometimes slow alcohol absorption (as blood flow to the stomach is reduced), whereas being relaxed might not. These effects are minor compared to the factors above, but it shows how dynamic BAC can be.

Key point: Because of all these factors, two people who drink the exact same amount can end up with very different BAC levels. There is no perfectly reliable formula to predict BAC for everyone – charts and calculators can only give rough estimates.
